A New Thought – The World is the Field of Harvest

The topmast of The James bent nearly in two as the ship battled the lashing winds. Resisting the storm seemed futile. One moment, the ship’s prow sank beneath the raging waves; the next, it soared toward the stormy sky.

It was February 14, 1743. The James was returning from the West Indies with missionary leader Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf aboard.

Driven Toward Destruction

As the ship approached the coast of southern England, a relentless North Atlantic gale drove her toward jagged rocks along the shoreline. Below deck, the passengers and crew of the British vessel huddled together, fearing for their lives.

Meanwhile, the winds shrieked and the ship pitched violently. With every passing hour, the vessel drifted closer to the English coast. Captain Nicholas Garrison began to accept what seemed inevitable.

A Calm Voice in the Storm

Turning to the quiet passenger standing beside him, the captain spoke grimly.

“Within hours, Your Excellency, we will be at the bottom of this ocean. The ship will not survive a crash against that rocky shore.”

Count Zinzendorf raised his eyebrows at the captain’s stark prediction. Then, above the roar of the storm, he replied confidently:

“Captain, within two hours, this storm will be abated, and we will be sailing in calm seas once again.”

The Storm Abates

Captain Garrison shook his head in disbelief. Nevertheless, both men fought their way through the lashing winds and joined the crew and passengers below deck.

Two hours later, the captain carefully climbed the wooden ladder back to the deck. What he saw filled him with wonder. The winds had shifted, the storm clouds had parted, and blue skies stretched above the ship. Calm seas now surrounded the vessel on every side.

A Question of Faith

Amazed by what had happened, Captain Garrison turned to Count Zinzendorf and asked:

“Count Zinzendorf, how did you know that we would have these calm seas in exactly two hours?”
